Sorrow is a wave. Undulating like the breath of every human being. In, out. And again. Sorrow goes up and down like the waves on a heart rate monitor. It is a necessary evil. Without it, we would not know true joy. Sorrow is the absence of joy. There is no exact middle. There is a spectrum. Waves on the ocean, salt burning the sand as they drag it in. And cool, cool relief as they wash it away too.
The mistake we make is to be afraid of this very necessary human emotion. Most of us aren’t stable enough to deal with our emotions. So we commonly choose to do one of two things. One, we bury them. All emotions we don’t like. Suppress them. Keep them locked up in the dark caverns of our mind. Caverns that if they were lit up would be beautiful, decorated with the masterpieces of our personalities. As it is, we’re too timid to look. The problem with this is that those locks don’t hold. And when the box or boxes open, those emotions are stronger than ever. And because we didn’t learn to deal with them as they grew, there’s no way we can deal with them now that they’re bigger. Milo carries a calf on his shoulders every day since it was born. We lock our proverbial calf up, the day it feels heavy. And then we wait for it to reach full size, and just barge out of its crammed pen. There’s no way we can lift it then.
Two, we run away from them. Oh, that’s just as bad. We can keep running. But we can never truly hide from our emotions. We live in a social world. We are social creatures. Even if you go live on a farm, can you deal with the immense loneliness your human nature will shoot you with? No. We can run and hide in every and any corner of the earth. Small little problem is that your emotions are inside of you. And we forget that. So you can run to the farthest corner of the world. But they’ll always be with you. It’s baggage you can’t lose or shake off. You have to deal with your emotions.
But the good thing is, you can. Just like milo. Build up. Let them wash over you. Accept the sorrow. Accept the waves, because you know that right now, although you may be drowning, the tide will soon ebb. And you will be baptized, cleansed off the weight, and reborn. Stronger. Better. Sorrow will come into your life. Let it run its course. Let it carve rivers in your soul. Because you will be all the wiser by the path they have set for you.
